Why we built a moving services marketplace inside a property portal

Property portals have existed for long enough that most people take their core function for granted: you search, you find listings, you contact an agent. That part works reasonably well.

What has traditionally happened next is less tidy. You leave the portal, find a conveyancer, find a removals firm, find a mortgage broker, check broadband on a separate site, and manage all of it through a mixture of browser tabs, emails, and phone calls. The portal has done its job. You are on your own for the rest.

We thought that was an odd place to stop.

The actual job people are trying to do

When someone uses a property portal, their goal is not to find a listing. It is to move into a new home with as little friction as possible. Finding the property is one step in a process that also involves legal work, financing, logistics, and a long list of practical tasks.

Treating those as entirely separate problems, each handled by a different company with no connection to the others, adds real cost and cognitive load to an already demanding process. People often choose their conveyancer or removals firm based on whichever one came up first in a search, or a recommendation that may be outdated. There is no particular reason that should be how it works.

What we built and why

Home's moving services marketplace brings several of those services into the same platform where people are already searching for property. You can request removals quotes, get conveyancing referrals, access mortgage broker referrals, and check broadband availability at your new address, all from your account on the platform.

The services are connected to the move in progress, not bolted on as an afterthought. If you are tracking a property, we know the address and approximate timing. That context makes the requests more useful and the results more relevant.

We also built the broadband check differently from most: instead of relying on a single coverage aggregator, it queries around 16 ISPs directly to give you address-level availability rather than area-level estimates. That distinction matters when you are trying to know what is available at a specific property, not just the postcode.

The same logic applies to getting a removals quote through Home and to conveyancing: both are tied to the actual address and move date on your account, not a generic form you fill in from scratch.

What we are not claiming

We are a challenger portal. We are honest about that. The marketplace is real and the services work, but we are not yet the size where we have deep coverage in every part of the country or relationships with every category of moving service.

What we have built is the infrastructure to expand. The goal is that over time, more of the moving process can happen in one place, with less hunting and less repetition. That is useful to the person moving. It is also the only way a newer portal builds something people choose to use, rather than adding more listings to a market that already has 1,249,531 of them on Home alone.

What it means for people using Home

If you are using Home to search for property, the marketplace services are there when you need them. You do not have to use them. There is no obligation, no upselling during your search, and no pressure to bundle anything.

When you are ready to move and you want a starting point for conveyancing, removals, or broadband, it is available from the same platform where you found the property, whether that's a 3-bed house in Fringford, Oxfordshire or a 1-bed flat on Henry Street, Manchester.
